The Masters Tournament, also known as The Masters, is one of the four major championships in professional golf. Scheduled for the first full week of April, it is the first of the majors to be played each year. Unlike the other major championships, the Masters is held each year at the same location, Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf club in the city of Augusta, Georgia, USA.
Since its conception in 1934, the Masters, originally dubbed The Augusta National Invitational, has been synonymous with great names like Snead, Palmer, Nicklaus and Woods. Its founders were dedicated to accommodating players, press and patrons alike, and it was their beliefs that molded the Masters from its origins to the present day tournament we know. Club members at Augusta have always been expected to be more than just spectators. Green jackets were first worn by members beginning in 1937 as a way to make them more recognizable in case patrons have questions or needed anything. Out of this tradition, the Green Masters Jacket was born and has since become one of the most recognized and coveted prizes in all of sports.
“The Masters just has a mystique about it. The mystique about Augusta National is Bob Jones and what he meant to golf. The class with which the event is held and with all the special things that you just won’t find in other places...it’s a cut above--way above.”
- Jack Nicklaus
